Clatsop County Hosts warmly welcome cruise ship visitors to Astoria and Clatsop County by providing friendly, accurate information and guidance, enhancing the visitor experience while supporting local businesses and preserving the character and flow of our coastal community.

The tradition of welcoming cruise ships to Astoria began in the mid‑1990s, when Bruce Conner, Willis Van Dusen, and Skip Hauke—along with their wives—started greeting passengers from the one or two blue‑water vessels that docked in port each season. What began as a friendly gesture soon proved to have meaningful economic and community impact. National studies show that the average cruise couple spends approximately $150 in local ports of call. Multiplied by a thousand or more passengers and crew, cruise visits represent hundreds of thousands of dollars potentially circulating through our unique coastal region.

For nearly 25 years, Clatsop Cruise Hosts (CCH) has played a vital role in ensuring these visits are positive, well‑organized, and beneficial for both visitors and local businesses. Our volunteers help passengers navigate and explore Astoria’s rich coastal heritage by providing up‑to‑date, friendly information—directions to restrooms, Wi‑Fi access, pharmacies, the Post Office, restaurant recommendations, and answers to countless “Where can I find…?” questions.

Strategically stationed throughout the Port and downtown Astoria, Cruise Hosts create a welcoming, calm, and informative experience for cruise passengers. Without their presence, visits could become chaotic, placing added stress on merchants and community resources. Through their dedication, Clatsop Cruise Hosts help ensure that cruise ship days remain enjoyable, efficient, and economically beneficial for our entire region.
